Fw: Can you help the homeless of Lancashire?

Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2014 10:35 PM
Subject: Can you help the homeless of Lancashire?

Hi,

My names Wesley Hall and I'm writing this E-Mail to get as many like-minded individuals, groups, organisation, charities and services together to help eradicate homelessness in our County.

Before you read this E-mail, I want you to take a few moments out of your schedule and watch this short video… To see what we're doing… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVpc8eOBRV0

East Lancashire has the highest number of empty homes in the country, yet homelessness is a severe problem here. We're hoping to network and develop a model of strategic plans to facilitate the needs of homeless people here in a bid to get as many of them off the streets… Permanently. There's a whole range of homelessness, so we need to address each problem and tackle them logically with action.

We're holding a meeting for everyone who would like to get involved and feel it would be beneficial if you and could attend as we're hoping to get as many people together who can work towards making this happen.

It's at 'Energy Zone' Community Centre, Fishmoor Drive, Blackburn on the 21st June 2014 between 12 noon and 1:30pm and there's already many people attending. If you use Facebook, please have a look at the event:

https://www.facebook.com/events/1423839767890392/

We NEED your HELP as we're out weekly again to #‎helpthehomeless and we need donations of things like snacks (Pot Noodles, Flapjacks, Nuts, Soup, Sausage Rolls, Sandwiches, Crisps etc), sleeping bags, hot drinks supplies, flasks, new underwear, coats, gloves/hats, toothbrushes/toothpaste and anything else you can think of... Even if it's something that could benefit someone we get into housing who would need furniture etc... EVERYTHING helps and we'll arrange collection or you can drop off at The-Lord Nelson Pub, Nelson or Pendle Games UK in the Arndale... Or even just turn up on wednesday when we're going to be out helping the homeless.

Please invite all of your friends to our event:https://www.facebook.com/events/1459415270943801/

We'll be meeting this Wednesday at 7:30pm in Burnley (At the side of the Library on the carpark) and then at 8:30pm in Blackburn (At the side of Blackburn Fire Station on the carpark) as we do every week to provide the homeless of East Lancs with outreach support, housing advice, food, drinks and much more!!!

The more people who get involved, the better... We need to eradicate homelessness on our streets. It's 2014!!!!!

It all started with this...http://www.burnleyexpress.net/news/campaigns/mercy-mission-to-help-homeless-in-storms-1-6446182

Then a few more came...
http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/11013907.Strangers_rally_to_help_East_Lancs_homeless/

And last week...
http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/11079268.Online_movement_helps_Blackburn_homeless/?ref=mac

Each week is becoming stronger and the people involved now are forming a charity so that they can raise funds for a mobile soup kitchen (Catering Trailer) and a van so that we can transport people to available rooms in emergency accommodation and move the mobile soup kitchen around East Lancs.

At present we're just starting out, but we need companies in and around Burnley & Blackburn to act as 'drop off points' for our kind donations. If anyone could help, we'd be appreciative!

If you have ever been homeless, work within the homelessness sector already or simply want to get involved because you care...

Please add me on here (I can't reply to people who aren't on my friends list! or simply turn up on wednesday night with a few bits so that we can make an impact and help those who are less fortunate.

We've been offered a property to develop into an emergency hostel for those who 'slip the net' and can't get into the ones available and would also welcome generous offers from tradesmen who are willing to help us renovate it into a fully operational emergency accommodation provider.

Follow our progress on:http://www.facebook.com/help.the.homeless.east.lancs and http://www.facebook.com/iwantchange

http://www.twitter.com/HTHEastLancs

People are dying on our streets each night and over 80,000 children will be homeless this Christmas in the UK if we don't do something to stop it. If you know of any properties for rent that would take a council bond or would be willing to house-share, let us know… ANY help from anyone is appreciated and we're hoping to develop a database of affordable, good standard and safe housing accommodation. Basically a letting site without silly 'admin fees'! :-)

REMEMBER: 'Homelessness' can affect ***ANYONE*** - It could happen to you!!!

Help The Homeless - East Lancashire aims to address issues such as unemployment with opportunities for re-training and self-employment workshops as well as a whole array of other opportunities. Substance misuse and offending is a huge problem for many of those people who are deemed 'sick' or 'unemployed' and many seem to think that they 'can't get a job' because of that. ABSOLUTE NONSENSE! We can help them rebuild their lives, gain employment or even setup their own business!

Working with other initiatives such as #thelighthouseproject, Newground, SafeSpace Pendle, Pendle Council, Burnley Council, Rossendale Council, Ribble Valley Borough Council, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Nightsafe, Blackburn Foodbank, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Blackburn College and all of the people who work in the homelessness sector we aim to make sure that the quality of life in East Lancs is much greater than other areas, and hopefully they will replicate.

By facilitating a whole network of like-minded individuals to come together with one ethos... To get people off the streets, rebuilding their lives, making positive changes.

It may sound simple, but it's going to take a LOT of strategic innovative like-minded people to get involved... And for that reason we're holding our meeting to discuss our plans and brain-storm ideas for the future.

If you could attend along with any of your friends, family or colleagues then we'd really appreciate your input into what we believe will become a fantastic project to work on that will inevitably save lives.

PLEASE WATCH OUR FIRST EVER SHORT CAMPAIGN MOVIE AT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N3h2Chjdu0

Thankyou x

We don't want money - #WEWANTCHANGE

Even if you can't attend, please forward this E-Mail on to people who you think would like to get involved. With the right people working towards one goal… To get people off the street, rebuilding lives… We can do this!

Kind Regards

Wesley Hall

RAP SONG RELEASED HIGHLIGHTS THE DANGERS OF PAY-DAY INDUSTRY "GROOMING YOUNG PEOPLE"

A rap song aimed at warning young people about the possible dangers of pay day lenders is released today.

Inspired by the Archbishop of Canterbury's comments on responsible lending, songwriter and music producer Charles Bailey approached the Church of England with the idea for the rap.

The song, called "We Need a Union on the Streets" by Charles Bailey, feat. Question Musiq and Delilah also features Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert.com and tells the stories of young people who get into debt because of payday loans with high interest rates. It aims to highlight credit unions as a better way to borrow.

Charles said of his involvement: "When I listened to the Archbishop of Canterbury speaking out about pay day lenders I felt moved to do something to help his task group to reach to the urban youth who are often the victims and introduce them to a much safer and ethical way of borrowing through credit unions."

Martin Lewis said: "The payday loan industry is relatively new, and has used powerful marketing to build its business and groom young people to think it is normal. It isn't normal, it's an extremely expensive way to borrow that most should avoid.  We've all heard the cases of those who just wanted a couple of hundred quid but quickly owe many times that.  Yet that still doesn't do the job, the ease of access and ability to just press a button and get cash is so powerful, we need to shout, or in this case even sing, from the rooftops about the dangers of this type of borrowing, to try and counter the message".

Dr. Elizabeth Henry, the Church's Adviser for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns "I am thrilled that Charles was inspired to contact us and use his creative gifts to support the Church of England's response to the very real problems of payday lending. Efforts like this help the Church to extend its reach and engage with people on issues that affect their everyday lives. The song is appealing and I hope will get the message across to all communities that credit unions are a much safer way to borrow."

The song underscores the views of the Church of England that young people are particularly vulnerable to payday lending and are attracted by the promise of instant cash. Almost 1 in 6 of 18-24 year olds say they are likely to take out a payday loan in the next 6 months. (source Personal Debt Snapshot Wave 13 [March 2014] based on a national representative survey  of 2,013 GB adults.)

The song also promotes credit unions as a better alternative to payday loans, charging less interest, encouraging members to save as well as borrow.

ENDS

The lyrics of the song:

Martin Lewis intro:
Payday loans gone wrong are a horrendous thing.
We hear about people who've borrowed £100, £200 and owe a £1,000 less than year later
It explodes, it's all about compound interest
That you pay interest on the interest on the interest…

Chorus
What we need is a union, we need a union on the streets (x2)
Everybody hand in in hand, people can't you understand

Verse 1:
Yeah its unfair ---
But ,they don't care,
The rich get richer,
While poor get less,

Young Dave worked hard tryna to get a degree
Handing out CVs for a JOB,
Zero hour contract, need more hours,
Stressed out life, when you're fighting the powers,
Bills keep coming on a daily basis,
He's just one of a million cases
Now he's in debt, got a payday loan,
Interest rate's higher than the money he owes
Red letter after letter, manz callin his phone,
Now he's droppin out of uni, can't pay for his home, --
CPA took the money he had, automatically took it right out of the bank
Now his life's upside down, where does he turn,
It should be illegal the money they earn

Chorus
What we need is a union, we need a union on the streets (x2)
Everybody hand in in hand, people can't you understand

Verse 2:
It's so clear that they don't care,
The rich get richer,
While the poor get less

Young Sophie used be the life of the Party,
Lost her job and that's when it started,
Credit card blocked, no money for heat,
Banks won't help her get back on her feet,
Keep seeing adverts on TV,
But be careful the small print that you can't see,
Now she's in debt, got a payday loan,
Interest rates higher than the money she owes,
Red letter after letter, manz callin her phone,
Can't answer the door, so she's never at home,
CPA took the money she had,
Automatically took it right out of her bank
Now she life upside down, where does he turn,
It should be illegal the money they earn,

What we need is a union, we need a union on the streets (x2)
Everybody hand in in hand, people can't you understand

When you can't go on no more
And the bills coming through your door
Feels like nothing you can do
There's a union there for you
When you need someone to call
Pick you up just before you fall
Only thing we want peace and love and unity
That's what we need

What we need is a union, we need a union on the streets (x2)

Letter from Church Urban Fund to all CofE Clergy

This email briefing has just been sent out by CUF to all clergy... Maybe you'd like to ask your vicar if they have seen it and how the parish is going to respond...

Thank you to all those of you who were able to highlight Church Urban Fund's work during Lent. I have heard of many retired clergy who take services locally and are able to talk about Church Urban Fund. We are now working with 14 local partnerships in dioceses across the country. We are also using the funds raised in churches and from generous individuals to support new initiatives and projects throughout England that are reaching out to people trapped in poverty, on the margins of society. For many, the most painful aspect of poverty is the poverty of having no one the turn to. Church communities around the country are holding out the hand of friendship and support to those in need. See how money was spent in our annual report here http://www.cuf.org.uk/about-us

Web of Poverty

Are we all better off today? Is everyone sharing in the upturn in the economy? Are all "hard-working" families sharing in the economic growth? If you want to know more about the facts of poverty please look at our latest report on the definition of poverty in England which is the basis of our work http://www.cuf.org.uk/poverty-england And don't forget the Poverty Look Up tool to assess poverty in your parish.

New Research

Another piece of research we have commissioned enables us to demonstrate the enormous effort the church is making in tackling the poverty. In his Christmas address, Archbishop Justin Welby said that the church was in many places the glue holding society together. New research commissioned by Church Urban Fund and conducted by Theos, set out to explore the scale and nature of how churches hold communities together. The full report will be published shortly and will be available on our website. http://www.cuf.org.uk/how-we-help/research

Poverty Sunday

Poverty Sunday is an opportunity for congregations to reflect on the reality of poverty in our society and its effects on individuals and local communities. Poverty Sunday is on 22 June this year and if you are leading a service on that day, you may want to invite the congregation to use some part of your Sunday service to get behind the clashing headlines about economic growth, benefits and the reality of poverty. Resources are available on our website for you to use if not in June then maybe on some other appropriate Sunday or as a study group. http://www.cuf.org.uk/get-involved/act/resources/poverty-sunday
