Announcing a new direction

Church Action on Poverty, Housing Justice and Scottish Churches Housing Action are sad to announce that we have decided to bring the Action Week partnership to an end. Action Week 2014 was the final year of operation. The partners thank everyone who has contributed to the work – supporters, churches, friends and sponsors.

Poverty & Homelessness Action Week was established in 2008, linking Homelessness Sunday with Poverty Action Sunday. Over the seven exciting years of activity, there have been significant achievements. However, it has proved impossible to cover the costs of coordinating Action Week, and the partners are no longer in a position to subsidise this activity.

Our themes have been: 'Opening Doors, Opening Hearts'; 'Voices from the Edge'; 'Enough for All'; 'Who Counts?'; 'Breaking Barriers'; 'Can You Cast the First Stone?'; and 'Standing With People in Crisis'. Through these themes, we have successfully:

• Linked the issues of homelessness and poverty, and raised their public profile
• Delivered worship materials and children's resources
• Developed a prayer calendar, with a daily reflection through the week
• Engaged grassroots churches and community organisations
• Demonstrated successful partnership working
• Opened hearts and minds to people experiencing exclusion through these issues.

All this has been done on a shoestring. The partner organisations have decided that we will now each focus on our own fundraising. Relationships remain strong, and we will work jointly as appropriate. The worship resources will remain available to download at the Action Week website for anyone who wishes to use them – sadly, it looks as if they will remain relevant for some years to come.

We thank all who have been with us on our journey, and invite you to continue standing with us in our shared vision of justice for people on the edges of our society. In 2015, Homelessness Sunday will be on 18 January, and Poverty Action Sunday on 15 February. We hope as many Action Week supporters as possible will  take part in both. 

You will not receive any further emails from Poverty & Homelessness Action Week. Each of the Action Week partners will contact you shortly, inviting you to continue supporting our work through the special Sundays or in other ways. At that point, you will have an opportunity to opt out of receiving future messages from any of us.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2 April 2014   Evangelical Alliance wants political action on escalating hunger in the UK The Evangelical Alliance, which represents two million evangelical Christians across 79 denominations, is calling on David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Milliband to do what it takes to ensure their parties put the issue of hunger in the UK firmly on the political agenda. It is also urging the cross parliamentary inquiry into foodbanks and food poverty in Britain led by the Bishop of Truro to include in its Terms of Reference an investigation on wage level stagnation, food price rises, and benefit changes and failures - as they relate to the rise of hunger. "Hunger in the UK is a real issue which must be of concern to us all, including the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and the Labour Party," Steve Clifford, general director of the Evangelical Alliance, said as he co-signed a letter from the End Hunger Fast campaign which is to be delivered to the main political parties on 16 April. "We normally associate malnutrition with developing countries wracked by food shortages and poverty, but it's disturbing to learn that malnutrition is right here on our own doorsteps. "Last year more than 5,500 people were admitted to UK hospitals suffering with malnutrition. No one should be allowed to go hungry in Britain. Many of our member churches are playing their part hosting and stocking food banks and we need the political parties to do play their part as well," he added. Clifford said that the new statistics set to be released by The Trussell Trust, the UK's largest Christian food aid agency, later this month are "astonishing and disturbing" because of the "quantum leap in the number of people going hungry since last year". Helen Lloyd, manager of the Arnold Foodbank, which is operated by the Daybrook Baptist Church in Nottingham, an Alliance member church, said that the number of people relying on the service has nearly tripled in the last 15 months. "Recently we are seeing many more people coming to the food bank as a result of the change in the benefits system. Basically there is always a gap between them stopping benefits and starting something else and it is in this gap that they need help," she said. "We also provide emergency food boxes for a church in Nottingham and the number we give out has doubled," she added. Clifford and other directors of the Alliance in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland are participating in the 4 April fast to help draw attention to the serious hunger crisis facing the UK. Listening For Life course ... in Preston from Tues 29th April

Preston Listening Ministry Development Group - 4 weeks.  New dates have been agreed for the Listening For Life course that had to be postponed in Feb.  The dates are Tuesday 29 April, 6, 13, 20 May from 7-9.30pm at Central Methodist Church.  It will be run by Acorn Trust.  The registration form is here
