Free drug awareness training for workers and volunteers involved with homeless people and youth

Gill Beeley and I recently met with Sharon Murphy (Hope UK's  Representative in the North West - website is www.hopeuk.org) and heard of the work they were doing and resources and courses they provide. Sharon has just emailed me this and would be delighted to hear from anyone in Lancashire (or the wider region) who may be interested. All details and links are below.

Please feel free to circulate this further.

Subject: Free drug awareness training for homeless workers

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to introduce you to Hope UK, a drug and alcohol education charity for children and young people.  We work through trained volunteers throughout the UK in schools, pupil referral units and hostels, and with youth groups, churches and parents' groups.

I am one of Hope UK's voluntary Drug Educators and also a trained General Practice nurse.  Currently living near Manchester, I have had experience of working with people affected by substance misuse and am desperate to see young people living life to the full and not getting caught up in a culture of binge drinking and drug misuse.

I am also Hope UK's Representative in the North West and I am available to deliver drug awareness training sessions for staff involved in work with young people.

As I'm sure you are well aware, there is a real need for this work in the North of England.  Alcohol-related deaths are much higher than the national average, as is alcohol-related crime.  Even more worrying is the fact that this applies to children as well.  Deaths from liver disease have risen nationally by 40 per cent in the last decade.  The use of legal highs is also escalating and, in some cases, causing mental and physical problems.  Homelessness can exacerbate all of these problems.

I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you or someone else at the Homeless Forum to talk about how we might work together.  You can e-mail me at s.murphy@hopeuk.org or ring me on 07870 813407.

Our website is www.hopeuk.org if you would like to know more.

Yours sincerely,

Sharon Murphy

North of England Representative
