Advent

From despair to hope this Christmas

At Christmas, many families feel under enormous financial pressure to create the perfect Christmas. This short-term pressure often leads to long-term despair for the poorest in our society.

Archbishop, Justin Welby, has advocated strongly against pay day lenders and it is at Christmas that many families can feel the most financial pressure to use exploitative forms of credit.

Church Urban Fund has produced a free online Advent Calendar to reflect on the issues and show how churches are helping. With daily video, reflection and prayer. Explore Days 1 and 2 now by clicking on the doors with photos.

We can send daily reminders and a link for the calendar if you register here.

Fairer finance for all

Access to financial services is essential in our society. However, a significant number of people lack access to even the most basic financial products.

Teaching children about poverty

Church Urban Fund and REonline have produced religious education resources for 8-12 year olds.

Teachers and youth leaders may find these useful if you can help spread the word:

What's to be done about poverty in England?

What difference does Jesus make?

We are also developing resources for Lent to look at the difference that Jesus makes to our engagement with society and politics in light of the forthcoming election year.

Look out for more details to follow.

Can you host a Pover-Tea party,
Giving Tuesday – 2nd December?

This year we're participating in Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving coordinated by The Charities Aid Foundation. With spending pressures looming at Christmas, Giving Tuesday gives an opportunity to show the world why it's good to give and help causes we all care about.

As friends of Church Urban Fund, we invite you to participate with us by hosting a "Tea to Tackle Poverty". Simply get together with your colleagues, friends, family or church group for tea, cake and conversation to raise funds for the work of Church Urban Fund.

You can also follow along with the conversation on Twitter, Facebook #givingtuesday #teatotacklepoverty and donate at https://www.cuf.org.uk/donate
